The Federal Statistical Office reports that building land has never been as expensive as it will be in 2020, with buyers paying an average of 199 euros for a square meter of land ready for building. In 2010, it was still 130 euros. This represents a percentage increase of around 53.08 percent.
In the federal states, however, land buyers must be prepared for enormous price differences. While building land in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg is very expensive at an average of €349 and €245 per square meter respectively, land buyers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia pay only €46 to €63 per square meter.
However, there is a difference not only in terms of the federal states, but also in terms of the size of the cities. Property buyers have to dig deep into their pockets, especially in large cities. In the 14 largest cities with at least 500,000 inhabitants, a square meter of building land costs an average of 1,213 euros; in cities with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants, the average price is only 71 euros per square meter.
