Study: Inequality in housing markets

Real estate buyers and renters with medium to low incomes have found it even harder since the Corona pandemic. This is the result of a study by researchers at the International Real Estate Business School (IREBS) at the University of Regensburg, sponsored by the Hanns Böckler Foundation. The reason for this is that the slump in real estate prices expected for 2020 has failed to materialize and real estate prices have even risen in some regions.

According to the study, this will have a negative impact on low-income buyers and tenants in particular. For buyers, home ownership would become unaffordable in many places. Tenants who already pay a high price for housing would also be burdened more, through higher housing costs.

According to the study, prices have risen particularly in regions where housing was previously still affordable. Households with high incomes are therefore not as strongly affected by the developments. The full study can be downloaded at imk-boeckler.de.
