Study: Where buying real estate pays off for commuters

Is it cheaper to buy a property in the suburbs and commute to work in the metropolis? This question was investigated by the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI) on behalf of Postbank. It compares the seven largest cities in Germany - Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart and Düsseldorf.

The study shows after how many years the more favorable real estate sale in the Speckgürtel pays off. Travel costs are also taken into account. According to the study, commuters who buy property in the Frankfurt area benefit the most. From Langen in Hesse, they can reach Frankfurt am Main in just nine minutes by train. According to the study, the savings from the more favorable real estate purchase are only used up after around 76 years.

Dreieich and Duisburg are in second and third place. Commuters need 14 minutes by train to get from Dreieich to Frankfurt am Main. Here they benefit from a calculated saving of 61. The journey from Duisburg to Düsseldorf takes 12 minutes. Commuters also benefit here from a calculated saving of around 61 years. For further information, please visit postbank.de.
