Development: Rents have become more affordable according to Haus & Grund

The owners' association Haus & Grund Deutschland has found in a study that rents have become more affordable for wage earners between 2015 and 2020. For the study, the owners' association compared, among other things, the increase in wages with the increases in existing rents and new contract rents.

While wages rose by an average of 11.3 percent during the survey period, existing rents rose by an average of 6.0 percent and new contract rents by 6.6 percent, according to Haus & Grund. Existing rents have become less affordable in only 4 and new contract rents in only 55 of the 401 counties surveyed.

However, the average gross wages of full-time employees subject to social insurance contributions were used for the studies. The association itself therefore concludes from its studies that government measures to improve housing affordability should focus primarily on single parents, pensioners and students.
