Trainees and students can also receive the heating allowance. This was recently decided by the cabinet. In an FAQ, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) now describes the requirements they must meet to qualify.
For example, trainees who have received vocational training assistance or training allowance and no longer live with their parents will automatically receive the heating cost allowance. Students who have received BAföG for at least one month in the period from October 2021 to March 2022 can also receive the heating allowance. However, they must submit an application for this. The application can be submitted to the relevant offices from June 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022. However, the responsible offices have yet to be determined by the federal states.
While the heating allowance for trainees and students amounts to a one-time flat rate of 115 euros, housing allowance households receive a one-time heating allowance based on household size. This amounts to 135 euros for one person, 175 euros for two persons and 35 euros for each additional person. The heating allowance is intended to cushion the impact of higher energy prices, which are a particular burden on lower-income households.
