62 percent of consumers fear that higher energy prices will weigh heavily on them. This is the result of a survey conducted by Kantar on behalf of the Federation of German Consumer Organizations (vzbv). In addition, according to the survey, 71 percent of consumers do not want insolvent low-income customers to have their electricity or gas cut off by the end of April 2022. Around 1,000 interviews were conducted in the telephone survey.
The consumer association concludes: "This is a clear mandate to the German government to finally act. Immediate measures such as the suspension of electricity and gas blackouts are imperative to assist low-income households in this crisis," says Thomas Engelke, team leader for energy and construction at vzbv.
According to a study by the vzbv, the increased energy prices for electricity mean the following: An electricity consumption of 3,500 kWh leads to annual additional costs of up to 1,654 euros compared to existing customers. Gas customers also pay more, according to vzbv. With a gas consumption of 20,000 kWh, annual additional costs of up to 3,782 euros can be expected. The figures come, among other things, from price data sheets of the basic suppliers of the 14 most populous cities in Germany with over 500,000 inhabitants and vzbv.de's own calculations.
