Politics: Alliance of associations calls for more money for senior-friendly renovations

Several associations demand from the policy to continue the KfW subsidy program "Altersgerecht umbauen" 455-B with a funding volume of at least 150 million euros annually in the budget year 2022. The federations criticize that "in the current government draft to the federal budget 2022 find [...] no more means for the KfW subsidy promotion of the age-fair change of houses and dwellings [find]". According to the associations, there will be a high demand for age-appropriate converted apartments in the future.

To date, only 1.5 percent of apartments in Germany are barrier-free. However, according to a study conducted by the Institute for Housing and the Environment (IWU) on behalf of KfW, there will be a shortage of around two million age-appropriate apartments by 2035. The alliance of associations is therefore calling on policymakers to step up their efforts with regard to age-appropriate housing, barrier removal and the strengthening of funding for the KfW program.

According to the associations Wohnen im Eigentum, the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft der Seniorenorganisationen, the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft Wohnungsanpassung, the Verband Wohneigentum, the Vereinigung Deutsche Sanitärwirtschaft and the Zentralverband Sanitär Heizung Klima, the budget for the funding program was used up after just a few months in recent years. Homeowners' associations were faced with particular difficulties because hardly any owners' meetings could be held until then. Since then, many people have been waiting for new funds in order to be able to start renovation work.
