Accessibility: Funding possible again

The German Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB) is promoting barrier-reduction measures with its "Altersgerecht Umbauen" program. To this end, it is making 75 million euros available to private builders and tenants via KfW. In addition to older people and people with limited mobility, families with children can also take advantage of the funding.

Structural measures in residential buildings that serve to reduce barriers are subsidized by the BMWSB and KfW with grants of up to 6,250 euros. According to the BMWSB, the structural measures can include the installation of elevators, the removal of door thresholds or the installation of a floor-level shower.

Individual measures are subsidized by KfW with 10 percent of the eligible costs (maximum 5,000 euros). For those who convert their house to the "age-appropriate house" standard, KfW reimburses 12.5 percent of the eligible costs (maximum 6,250 euros). The subsidy application must be submitted online at the KfW subsidy portal before the project begins. However, this is only possible until the funding has been used up.
