In which living environment do very old people in Germany live? The answers to these and other questions are provided by the eighth summary report of the D80+ study "Advanced Age in Germany" conducted by the University of Cologne and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ). The study found that 64.9 percent of respondents feel connected to their living environment. This attachment is greater when seniors live in their familiar surroundings and not in a nursing home.
However, most of the seniors surveyed have to face hurdles in their living environment. At least, only 9.1 percent of respondents said they did not have to overcome obstacles such as stairs. If the seniors live in homes or care facilities, they find better conditions there in this respect.
The BMFSFJ points out that most people want to remain living at home in old age. This is the case even if they need assistance. For this reason, interested parties can obtain further information on the topic, for example on special programs or brochures, on the bmfsfj.de website.
