Every second newly built apartment is already infested with mold during the construction period and should not actually be occupied at all - this is the opinion of the Association of Private Builders (VPB), which has published a guidebook on the subject of "mold in new buildings". The causes of mold growth are manifold. In addition to the ubiquitous mold spores, wetness during the construction phase and a lack of building control can also lead to mold growth.
Building owners who suspect mold growth on their construction site are advised by the VPB to hire an independent building expert, secure evidence and, if necessary, assert claims against the building contractor. The VPB points out that mold growth must be taken seriously, especially due to the fact that most types of mold are hazardous to health.
The guidebook also provides builders with some tips on how to avoid the development of mold. For example, the construction site should be well covered in winter to protect it from snow and rain. If construction then continues, the building site must be inspected in advance. In addition, builders can ensure good ventilation. Building owners can find further tips in the guidebook "Schimmel im Neubau" (mold in new buildings), which can be downloaded free of charge from the vpb.de website.
