Until Friday, March 31, cities, districts and municipalities can enter their exemplary climate protection projects in the nationwide "Climate Active Community 2023" competition organized by the German Institute of Urban Affairs (Difu), the National Climate Initiative (NKI) and the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK). The winners will receive prize money of 25,000 euros each, which in turn must be invested in climate projects.
Three competition categories have been announced at klimaschutz.de/en/wettbewerb2023, namely "Category 1 - Resource and Energy Efficiency," "Category 2 - Renewable Energies in Municipal Focus," and "Category 3 - Climate Protection through Cooperation with the Private Sector. In addition, a "Special Award - Climate Protection in Social Institutions" will be offered.
Cities, counties and municipalities can enter the competition if, for example, they implement measures to reduce resource or energy consumption, decisively promote the use of renewable energies or get private-sector companies on board with climate protection. The winners will be publicly announced and honored at the next Municipal Climate Conference. This is expected to take place in November 2023.
