Publication: "Atlas of Urban and Regional Development

The Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) has examined living conditions in cities, districts and regions against the backdrop of the Corona pandemic and published a corresponding publication. The "Atlas of Urban and Regional Development" is also devoted to the area of "housing." Among other things, the authors looked at the development of rents and real estate prices, the demand for living space by type of housing and household size, and the construction of new housing.

Among other things, the report shows that purchase prices for single-family and two-family homes in Germany's seven largest cities increased by 78 percent between 2016 and 2021. According to the BBSR, the high prices in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, Cologne, Munich and Stuttgart are causing residents - especially families - to move to the surrounding urban areas.

In doing so, they will need living space of the appropriate size, with larger households having increased more in living space per capita over the past decade than smaller households of one or two people, according to BBSR. In addition, "the pandemic effects of the home office, with an increasing demand for private workspaces, are also likely to be reflected in terms of rising living space," BBSR says. The Atlas of Urban and Regional Development can be read for free at bbsr.bund.de and ordered as a print edition.
