Hydrogen: building a core network

The Federal Cabinet has passed an amendment to the Energy Industry Act (EnWG). This is intended to drive forward the development of a hydrogen core network in Germany. Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection Robert Habeck emphasizes: "Our goal is to quickly ramp up the hydrogen market in order to further advance the decarbonization of economic sectors with high greenhouse gas emissions in particular."

The EnWG includes the planning of a hydrogen core network, which is to include important hydrogen infrastructures by 2032. Furthermore, the imminent approval of this network by the Federal Network Agency is specified. It is expected that the network will be modeled by the long-distance gas network operators in the coming months. Public stakeholders will also be involved.

The amendment also contains plans for comprehensive hydrogen network development planning, which is to be integrated into the EnWG by the end of the year. Among other things, the hydrogen requirements of energy-intensive companies are to be taken into account.
