The carpentry and timber construction industry in Germany is showing stability and growth, despite a decline in building permits. According to the association "Das deutsche Baugewerbe", the number of companies and employees in the sector increased in 2022. Larger companies with 20 or more employees in particular recorded remarkable growth. Sales growth of 1.3 percent was also achieved. A positive sales trend of 4.0% is expected for 2023 due to a high order backlog for existing buildings.
The nationwide average timber construction rate in 2022 was more than 21% for both residential and non-residential buildings. The number of approved residential buildings constructed mainly from wood increased significantly in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saarland and Thuringia. Particular increases in the proportion of timber construction in non-residential buildings were recorded in Rhineland-Palatinate, Berlin and Saarland.
Future viability and modernity characterize the carpentry trade, which is becoming increasingly efficient and weather-independent thanks to the use of machines. This development also makes the trade more attractive to women, which is reflected in the increasing proportion of women. This and other information on industry developments is available in the Carpentry/Timber Construction 2023 management report, which can be found on the Holzbau Deutschland website (holzbau-deutschland.de).
