Green buildings: sustainability drives the real estate investment market

Around 11.2 billion euros were invested in sustainable, certified buildings in Germany in 2022. This corresponds to a 30.6 percent share of the total investment market. This is according to the market report by BNP Paribas Real Estate GmbH. The document also provides information on the growing importance of green building certificates such as DGNB, BREEAM and LEED.

The sustainability factor clearly plays an important role for institutional investors in particular. According to BNP Paribas Real Estate GmbH, they invested over 60 percent of their investment volume in certified green buildings, while insurance companies even invested over 72 percent of their investment volume. Especially in sought-after A-cities such as Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich, the proportion of commercial transactions for sustainable buildings was over 40 percent.

Office properties remained the dominant category in the green building investment market, accounting for 46.2 % of total investment in the office asset class. This shows that almost every second euro in this category flows into certified buildings.
