Mainz has maintained its position as the most dynamic city in Germany in the current 2023 city ranking (1st place) and has therefore developed the best over the past five years. Berlin and Leipzig are in 2nd and 3rd place in the dynamic ranking, while Munich has made it to 1st place in the level ranking, which reflects the economic strength of the cities. Mainz is in 2nd place in this ranking and Stuttgart is in 3rd place.
Heidelberg stands out in the area of sustainability and climbs to first place, followed by Ingolstadt and Wolfsburg. The city of Heidelberg impresses with its future-oriented approach, outstanding research facilities and strong digital infrastructure. Herne, Duisburg and Gelsenkirchen, on the other hand, are at the bottom of the sustainability rankings.
The ranking reveals a remarkable dynamic in the metropolitan areas. Six of the seven largest cities in Germany are represented in the top 15 of the dynamics ranking, with Hamburg as the climber of the year. Only Stuttgart performs less well in 57th place. The major cities score particularly well in the real estate market, with Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg recording the highest increases in rents. This trend shows the high attractiveness of these cities, but at the same time represents a challenge for those looking to rent. The city ranking is a joint initiative of Wirtschaftswoche, ImmoScout24 and IW Consult, in which all 71 major German cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants are assessed on the basis of various factors such as economic strength, quality of life and sustainability.
