More and more people aged 65 and over are living in private households in Germany. According to a report by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), at least one person in this age group lived in around 13 million households in 2022. This corresponds to 32 percent of all households. Twenty years ago, only 29% of households had at least one person aged 65 or over.
Over a third of older people aged 65 and over live alone. The proportion of people living alone also increases with age, especially in the over-85 age group. The loss of a partner is a common reason for this.
One urgent problem associated with demographic change is the lack of accessible housing. In 2022, 81% of households with people aged 65 and over did not have step-free access to their home. Only 6 percent of homes met all the criteria for barrier-free living. In view of the growing number of older people, the need for age-appropriate and barrier-free housing is constantly increasing.
