A new potential for living space is emerging in densely populated cities: adding storeys to existing buildings. The portal "schoener-wohnen.de" points this out. A series of pictures shows how a 1950s apartment building in Germany was extended with two wooden cubes. Building owners benefit not only from a sustainable construction method, but also from an impressive view.
The two cubes, which were placed on top of the building using prefabricated timber construction, offer an open-plan living and dining area on the one hand and private rooms on the other. A roof terrace connects these two areas, while floor-to-ceiling windows and a ceiling height of over three meters guarantee an airy spatial impression. The prefabricated timber construction method is characterized by its low weight and quick assembly of the prefabricated elements, which makes it particularly suitable for such extension projects.
Despite the advantages, roof extensions are not yet widely used, as older buildings often have to be structurally adapted and building regulations make it difficult to add storeys. According to the portal, building owners should therefore turn to specialists such as architectural firms or experienced house manufacturers. They can help with technical and legal challenges and provide support with the necessary negotiations.
