Residential districts: research project on smart home systems

The "Silgentas" research project, led by legal IT specialist Frederik Möllers from Saarland University, focuses on improving IT security in residential areas with smart home systems. These systems offer considerable advantages. For example, they can increase comfort and energy efficiency by adapting heating and lighting settings to the needs of residents. However, the networked devices also provide large amounts of data that can be analyzed using artificial intelligence.

This means that such networked smart home systems also harbor risks, especially when it comes to the security and data protection of residents. "Silgentas" is therefore pursuing the goal of developing holistic security approaches and legal frameworks to protect networks from hackers, unauthorized access and failures. During the project, the researchers are also investigating algorithms that will make it possible to automatically detect anomalies.

The project "Security in intelligent networked homes (Silgentas)" is being funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research with 2.5 million euros. The total volume of the project amounts to 4 million euros, around 420,000 euros of which will go to Saarland University. Further information is available at: silgentas.de.
