From 2024, the Building Energy Act (GEG) will require the use of renewable energies for new heating systems, with hydrogen being considered as a possible alternative to natural gas. Despite the compatibility of hydrogen with existing heating technologies and gas networks, there are currently no heating systems that can be operated exclusively with hydrogen.
However, the energy advice service of the consumer advice center points out that green hydrogen produced from electrolysis or blue hydrogen produced from natural gas is currently practically unavailable. According to the consumer advice center, the reason for this is that there are only a few production facilities for this.
Overall, hydrogen will initially be available primarily in industry and commerce. Other alternatives such as heat pumps, which have proven to be efficient and sustainable, are recommended for heating residential buildings. If you have any questions about replacing your heating system, the energy advice service of the consumer advice center can help with a free hotline, Tel. 0800/809 802 400.
