Barrier-free living: Tips from the BSB

According to the Bauherren-Schutzbund (BSB), only two to three percent of all homes are classified as barrier-free. According to the BSB, barrier-free living not only increases living comfort for older people, but also benefits all generations. A level-access shower or step-free access to the living area are examples of measures that can make everyday life easier and increase the quality of living. The BSB has set out further measures in its guide "Ten tips for barrier-free living".

In order to create barrier-free living spaces in new builds or conversions, it is first important to precisely define the requirements and record them in the contract. The DIN 18040 standard provides important guidance for barrier-free planning and construction. If renovations are planned anyway, building owners should also take the opportunity to plan for the removal of barriers. Even small adjustments, such as removing door thresholds or installing grab rails, can make apartments and houses more comfortable. In addition to structural measures, technical aids such as electronic door locks or emergency call systems also offer additional safety and comfort, according to the BSB.

In order to minimize the financial burden, building owners should take advantage of funding opportunities. Expert advice, for example from a BSB building consultant, can also help to optimize the planning and implementation of barrier-free living concepts.
