Children's rooms: safety tips

Designing a safe home for children is of paramount importance. To avoid accidents, the German Furniture Quality Association (DGM) advises that children's rooms should be appropriately secured. Windows, doors, stairs, cupboards and sockets should be childproofed to ensure a safe environment. "Anyone who neglects the wall fixings supplied with furniture out of convenience or ignorance is being grossly negligent and runs the risk of cupboards and shelves toppling over, for example if a child tries to climb up them," warns DGM Managing Director Jochen Winning.

Special attention should be paid to the crib, which should be stable and secure. Sharp edges and sharp corners are taboo, as are materials that could be harmful to health. According to the DGM, the RAL "Golden M" quality mark offers parents guidance when buying children's furniture. It stands for the safety, durability and environmental compatibility of furniture.

Another important aspect when buying furniture today is the issue of climate protection. If this is important to parents, they can buy furniture with the RAL quality mark "Climate-neutral furniture production". Companies not only have to balance their CO2 emissions, but also offset them by purchasing climate protection certificates in order to receive the label.
