Barbecue season: how to avoid conflicts

If tenants want to barbecue in their garden or on their balcony, they should definitely take a look at the house rules and the tenancy agreement beforehand. The regional association "Haus & Grund Rheinland Westfalen" points this out. In some cases, barbecuing is completely prohibited. In residential complexes, barbecuing is often only permitted with electric barbecues to prevent fires. Violations of these regulations can have serious consequences, including warnings or even termination of the tenancy without notice.

However, if barbecuing is permitted on site, potential conflicts can still arise, especially in apartment buildings. Early consultation with neighbors can help to nip disagreements in the bud. For example, you can close the windows at an early stage. It may also be advisable to agree on the frequency of barbecuing, as the legal requirements depend on various court rulings and can therefore vary.

In order to avoid conflicts with neighbors, it is also advisable to keep to a quiet night after 10 pm. Association director Erik Uwe Amaya has another tip: "If you maintain a good relationship with your neighbors and invite them to the barbecue, you can elegantly avoid the problem of noise or unpleasant smells." Alternatively, you can use public barbecue areas to avoid conflicts altogether.
