The housing industry faces the challenge of providing adequate housing for older people. Despite the increasing demand for age-appropriate housing, not enough companies have yet developed strategies for this target group. One of the reasons for this is that other issues dominate day-to-day business on housing markets that are in high demand. This is the result of a study conducted by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) in cooperation with other institutions.
There are incentives for companies to develop a strategy for age-appropriate living, particularly in regions with low demand for housing and senior citizens as an important target group. Corresponding requirements from sustainability funds also encourage companies to develop such a strategy. The personal commitment of company managers also plays a major role.
A decisive measure for improving the supply of senior citizens with age-appropriate housing is the linking of various fields of action. These include raising tenants' awareness of age-appropriate housing and providing appropriate contacts who can specifically take needs into account when renting. Service providers and cooperation partners can also provide support, for example by offering social services in the neighborhood. The full study can be downloaded free of charge at: bbsr.bund.de
