In 2023, 64.6 percent of new residential buildings in Germany were equipped with heat pumps as their primary heating source. This proportion has more than doubled since 2014. The use of heat pumps is particularly widespread in detached and semi-detached houses at 68.9%, while this technology is used in 41.1% of multi-family houses. This is according to a statement from the Federal Statistical Office.
Renewable energy sources were the main source of energy for heating in 69.3% of newly constructed residential buildings in 2023. This represents a significant increase compared to 2014, when the proportion was 38.5%. In addition to heat pumps, renewable heating sources also include pellet heating systems, solar thermal energy and biogas.
Around 67,900 (80.7 percent) of the residential buildings approved in 2023 are to be heated primarily with renewable energy. In most cases (76.3 percent), heat pumps are to be used for this purpose. The downward trend in the use of natural gas in the residential buildings approved in 2023 (7.3%) confirms the shift towards more sustainable energy sources.
