Extreme weather events: Five cities in focus

Five German cities in particular are at high risk of extreme weather events - Frankfurt am Main, Leipzig, Saarbrücken, Dresden and Erfurt. These are the findings of a recent study by commercial real estate and investment management company JLL on the future development of climate risk up to 2050. The forecasts are based on detailed climate models that assess the frequency and intensity of natural events such as flooding, heat and hail.

The study assesses the risk for cities using a score that quantifies the potential threat posed by climate change. Cities with higher scores are more at risk. Frankfurt am Main has a score of 21.7, Leipzig 14.2, Saarbrücken 14.1, Dresden also 14.1 and Erfurt 13.8. According to the study, these cities are therefore facing major challenges as they have to adapt to increasing precipitation events, heat and other climatic changes.

The expected developments also mean that adjustments need to be made to urban planning and infrastructure. According to JLL, both residents and real estate investors will also have to take more precautionary measures to adapt to the changing conditions.
