12.4 million families in Germany live in owner-occupied property. This means that 57% of families live in their own property. Couples with children are particularly likely to live within their own four walls (62%). This is according to surveys conducted by the census on May 15, 2022. In addition to couples with and without children, families also include single parents with children.
However, where couples with children are particularly likely to live in property varies greatly from region to region. While in Berlin, for example, only 25 percent of couples live there, in Saarland the figure is 74 percent. Families most frequently live in living spaces of between 60 and 99 square meters, followed by living spaces of 120 to 139 square meters (15 percent).
The surveys also show that a particularly large number of senior citizens live alone in eastern Germany. The proportion was particularly high in the federal states of Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony and Thuringia, at 17% each. In Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Hesse, people over 65 live in 14% of all households. In the independent cities, many senior citizens live alone, particularly in Suhl in Thuringia (21%), compared to just 12% in Mainz and Heidelberg.
