In the event of water damage, the cause should first be clarified. Dirt particles indicate that the water is coming from outside. If clear water is leaking, it may be a leak or condensation water, for example. If foam, paper residue and fibrous material can be found in the water, it is likely to be dirty water. The Association of Private Builders VPB advises: "In this case, increased caution is required immediately, as such water damage is associated with exposure to germs and pathogens". Those who have to enter the premises can protect themselves by wearing special clothing.
So that the cause of the water damage can be determined later, those affected should take two samples. They can use empty, clean jam jars or preserving jars for this purpose. If these are not available, household cloths or coffee filter bags can also be used to take the samples. Once these have soaked up the water, the person concerned should also use them to absorb the dirt. The sample is then packed airtight in a freezer bag.
Those affected should also take photos of the damage before they start mopping up, cleaning up and repairing. The VPB points out that no third parties should be commissioned to carry out repairs if a warranty period is still running. In the worst case, this could lead to the loss of all warranty claims.
