Heating costs in Germany will rise considerably from 2027. This is the result of a study by the Munich Research Institute for Thermal Insulation. It clearly shows that the introduction of EU emissions trading in the building sector will significantly increase the cost of fossil fuels such as oil and gas. The aim of the measure is to accelerate the transition to more environmentally friendly heating technologies and reduce CO2 emissions.
According to the study, the highest cost increases will affect owners and tenants of buildings with poor energy efficiency. For apartments in efficiency class G, the additional annual costs for gas heating could amount to around 750 euros and up to 1,000 euros for oil heating. The authors of the study emphasize that the costs for more efficient buildings will be significantly lower, which will increase the financial incentive for energy-efficient renovations.
Experts are advising owners to invest in energy-efficient renovations in order to mitigate the upcoming rise in costs. At the same time, associations such as the Federal Association for Energy-Efficient Building Envelopes (BuVEG) are calling for increased government support to help cover the high refurbishment costs. The impending price increase is seen as a potential social problem that could make housing in Germany significantly more expensive.
