Autumn: Protect your roof from extreme weather conditions

In the fall and at other times of the year, it is particularly important to check roof tiles for displacement or damage after storms, heavy or continuous rain. The Association of Private Building Owners (VPB) points this out. Dipl.-Ing. Marc Ellinger from VPB recommends that not only roof tiles, but also gutters and downpipes should be regularly inspected and maintained in order to prevent façade damage caused by uncontrolled water run-off. These inspections can prevent costly water damage.

On flat roofs, large volumes of water - such as those caused by heavy rainfall - must drain away particularly quickly to prevent the roof structure from being overloaded. Flat roofs should also have an emergency overflow to ensure adequate drainage in the event of heavy rainfall. Green roofs also require protective measures such as strainers for their drainage systems to prevent blockages caused by plant debris.

Finally, according to the VPB, property owners should consider collecting rainwater for watering the garden or for use in the house. This requires rain barrels or special systems. The VPB advises seeking expert advice when planning such systems. This will ensure that all structural and legal requirements are met.
