A test apartment in Ebersbach-Neugersdorf is currently being used to test how new technologies and artificial intelligence can support senior citizens in their everyday lives. The aim is to enable older people to live safely and independently within their own four walls. Motion detectors and radar sensors detect falls and can automatically call for help in an emergency and open doors to facilitate access for helpers.
Such technological solutions are already established in care homes, but they are still rare in private homes. Researchers working at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences now want to make these systems available in private households. They are working on further developing the technology so that it functions smoothly in everyday living environments. The aim is to adapt the systems to typical challenges. These could be furniture, for example, which could block the sensors.
Lusatia serves as an ideal test market for these assistance systems. The region already has an elderly population, which is expected across Germany in the future. At a time when there are fewer and fewer care workers available, such technologies could provide important support to enable senior citizens to live safely and comfortably.
