Study: Numerous heating systems over 25 years old

A good 52 percent of homes in Germany are heated with natural gas. This is the result of the 2021 Consumption Characteristics Study by energy service provider Techem. For the study, data on final energy and water consumption as well as the costs for heating and hot water of 2.1 million German apartments in around 176,000 apartment buildings were examined.

The study also examined more than 90,000 currently issued energy certificates. It found that one-third of heating systems are older than 25 years and therefore "inefficient," according to Techem. According to Techem, measures such as highly automated heating system operation, continuous heating monitoring and optimized operational management can increase the efficiency of conventional heat generation in existing buildings by around 15 percent.

Optimum building insulation also offers energy-saving potential of 30 to 50 percent. In addition, tenants can also contribute to energy savings with proper ventilation behavior, thereby reducing consumption by 10 to 15 percent. "In times of gas crisis and in view of necessary decarbonization in the building stock, all market participants must come together and jointly develop energy efficiency solutions," says Matthias Hartmann, CEO at Techem.
