E-mobility: BDEW calls for greater use of the area tool

BDEW, the German Association of Energy and Water Industries, is calling on those responsible to fill the so-called area tool (flaechentool.de) with life. The area tool is intended to accelerate the development of charging infrastructure for e-vehicles. According to the BDEW, properties owned by the federal government, the states and municipalities, as well as companies, can be recorded in the area tool so that project developers can check these areas and submit offers for the installation of charging stations.

However, according to BDEW, the space tool has so far included only a few properties owned by the public sector, including no federal government sites and only a few sites owned by the German states. Municipalities and municipal companies have reported more sites. However, according to BDEW, only a single-digit percentage of the more than 10,000 municipalities in Germany use the space tool. The Chairwoman of BDEW's Executive Board, Kerstin Andreae, says: "The federal government should [...] promptly fill the area tool with life."

To this end, properties owned by the federal government and federally owned companies such as Deutsche Bahn are to be inspected, among other things, and the areas potentially suitable for the expansion of charging infrastructure are to be deposited there. BDEW also calls for more transparency for project developers and the federal government. This could be achieved with an overview that provides information on which cities and municipalities have already put properties out to tender or designated areas in their development plans.
