Metal garden fences, garden furniture and equipment should be protected against rust at an early stage. Rusting occurs when certain types of metal are exposed to moisture and air. If the metal is not sufficiently protected, decomposition of the elements will occur. As a general rule, metal garden furniture and equipment should be stored inside, especially on cold, damp days and in winter. For metal fences and other metal items that cannot be moved, such as balcony railings or trellises, proper rust protection is essential.
If rust has already formed, it should first be removed. A wire brush, rotary tool with a grinding attachment or a single-handed angle grinder are suitable for this. Rusty spots that cannot be reached well with a tool can be treated with sandpaper. It is important to remember to wear protective clothing, safety goggles and a respirator mask to protect yourself from grinding dust and rust particles.
After the dusted metal has been cleaned with a special agent, a protective metal paint can be applied. Metal protective paints are commercially available as sprays, varnishes and sprays. Hard-to-reach areas should be treated with a brush to avoid leaving untreated areas. If small holes or dents have formed in the metal, they are first filled with putty and then sanded. Before treatment with the metal protective lacquer, a primer should first be applied.
