Analysis: Artificial intelligence - from hype to energy industry reality

The analysis "Artificial Intelligence - from Hype to Energy Industry Reality", published by the German Energy Agency (dena), examines the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the integrated energy transition. The analysis presents nine fields of application and uses them to show both the technical development status of AI and the relationship between the costs and benefits of AI in the energy sector. Concrete recommendations for action in dealing with AI are also presented from this investigation.

One of the most promising areas for the use of AI in the energy sector at the moment is in forecasting. With the help of AI, quite precise predictions can be made here as to how the production and demand for renewable energies will develop in the future. The forecasts can thus be used to promote the generation and use of renewable energies more optimally. Processes would also be improved in the area of operational and inventory optimization through the use of AI. Here, for example, AI could support the deployment planning of generation plants and the optimization of grid operations. According to experts, a lively exchange of information between players from the energy industry and the digital sector is necessary as a basis for the successful use of AI in the energy industry.

The exchange of knowledge and experience from pilot projects and sustainability concepts already implemented must be promoted in order to successfully develop and implement a holistic strategy for the use of AI in the energy sector and for the energy transition together. Joint projects, such as the "Future Energy Lab", a collaboration between dena and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BmWi), should serve as a communication platform for stakeholders to jointly develop and test digital projects within the framework of the blockchain strategy.
