Tip: How to arrange your kitchen properly

Open space concepts that connect the living and dining areas put the kitchen at the center of the action. An open kitchen is also a popular meeting place when visitors arrive. But what should be considered if order is to prevail in the living and cooking area even after a cooking battle, and what arrangement as well as functions should a kitchen have to facilitate work processes?

Modern kitchens come in different shapes and sizes. Whether it's within a large, open space or a rather small, tubular and enclosed kitchen, with the right planning you can find space for all the important kitchen appliances and also for a dining table. Depending on the room size and shape, residents can choose between a single-line or double-line kitchen, or even an L- or U-shape and an open kitchen. A U-shape in particular allows for fluid work processes and makes the most of the available space. Therefore, if possible, a work triangle consisting of a sink, stove and refrigerator should also be installed. The distance between the work areas should not be greater than two arm lengths.

To work in a healthy way and prevent back pain, the kitchen should be adapted to your own body size. The rule of thumb for the optimal height of the work surface can be easily calculated by subtracting 15 centimeters from the elbow height with bent arms. Appliances that are used frequently should find their place at working height. The optimal place for the microwave or the oven is at eye level. When designing the lighting, make sure that the work area is equipped with bright working light. For this purpose, for example, it is convenient to equip the back wall of the work area with LED strips. For the dining area or above the dining table, pleasant, indirect light is suitable if a homely atmosphere is to be created.
