Choosing the right stair railing is not only about aesthetic aspects, the right building materials and an appealing look, but above all legal requirements must be met. The basis for the construction of a stair railing in Germany are the regulations of DIN standard 18065. The regulations laid down here apply to fall protection and general safety. Thus, not only the height of the railing and the handrail play an important role, but also the regulations for anchoring and execution must be observed.
If the staircase in the house has at least three steps and has a fall height of 15 centimeters, according to the law, a banister must be installed. If the fall height is less than 12 meters, according to the DIN standard 18065, a railing height of 90 centimeters must be guaranteed. If the fall height is greater, the railing must be 110 centimeters high. Likewise, the design should ensure that the distance between the bars is calculated so that no one can slip through. To guarantee the safety of children, the railings must be no more than 12 centimeters apart.
Statutory regulations also apply to the handrail of the staircase railing. For example, it must be non-slip and non-slip and contrast with the background or the wall in color, so that it can be perceived at first glance as a stair railing. Especially suitable is a handrail with an oval or round shape. The distance between the wall and the handrail must be at least five centimeters. The regulations from DIN standard 18040-2 apply to barrier-free construction. The regulations are set out in the state ordinance and specify a minimum dimension.
