The majority of German homeowners are showing a growing interest in energy-efficient living and are planning corresponding renovation measures. This is according to the TechnikRadar 2023 survey conducted by the German Academy of Science and Engineering, the Körber Foundation and the Center for Interdisciplinary Risk and Innovation Research at the University of Stuttgart. According to the study, around 80 percent of homeowners surveyed intend to carry out refurbishment measures. In addition, the attitude of Germans towards sustainable building and living is positive.
Photovoltaic and solar thermal systems are becoming increasingly popular among respondents. Around 46 percent of owners willing to renovate tend to install a photovoltaic system. Around a third (31.7) of owners are considering equipping their home with a solar thermal system. In addition, smart home technologies have clearly been gaining in importance since 2018. While only 8.1% of respondents used such devices five years ago, this figure has now risen to 21%.
Despite the increasing recognition of energy-saving measures and digital technology, the study also reveals that there is still a need for information among citizens. According to Cordula Kropp, the scientific project manager and sociologist at ZIRIUS, "a lot of information about technical possibilities is needed and a lot of support for renovation and energy conversion" in order to achieve the political goal of making the building stock sustainable and climate-neutral by 2045.
