In Germany, all old lead water pipes in buildings must be replaced by 2026. This measure is urgently needed due to the harmful effects of lead, which can damage the nervous system even in the smallest quantities. Young children are particularly at risk as they are more sensitive to the toxic effects.
Replacement is often time-consuming, as many of these pipes are difficult to access. They are hidden under floors or behind tiles, for example. The cost of replacement varies depending on the size of the house and the accessibility of the pipes and can be considerable for a medium-sized house. Specialist companies offer support in planning and carrying out the renovation work.
It should be checked in advance whether they are entered in the plumber register of the respective water network operator. According to a new drinking water ordinance, which has been in force since June 1, 2023, stricter regulations apply with regard to drinking water safety. In addition to health prevention, the regulation also aims to identify and prevent potential risks at an early stage by improving the protection of the water supply.
