Amendment to the law: digital electricity meters across the board

An amendment to the law can significantly accelerate the spread of digital electricity meters - known as smart meters - in Germany. These advanced metering systems are to be used across the board in households and businesses by 2032. The law ensures legal certainty for the rapid installation of smart meters, responds to criticism from the Federal Council and promotes the digitalization of the energy supply.

Smart meters represent a significant improvement over traditional electricity meters. They not only enable more precise monitoring of individual electricity consumption, but also support efficient management of the electricity grids by providing important data for energy producers. According to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, the introduction of smart meters is an important step towards a climate-neutral energy system and intelligent electricity grids that enable the secure and efficient distribution of renewable energy.

The new law provides for a structured plan for the installation and distribution of smart meters. From 2025, all consumers with a consumption of 6,000 to 100,000 kWh/year and system operators with an installed capacity of 7 to 100 kW will be required to install smart meters. Energy suppliers must offer dynamic tariffs from 2025. These can help consumers to optimize their electricity costs.
