Wood industry: Federal association complains about lack of insurance cover

The German Sawmill and Timber Industry Association (DeSH) is confronted with a serious problem: an increasing lack of insurance cover in the industry. The DeSH is alarmed by the growing number of companies that can no longer find insurance partners. Measures for fire detection and firefighting are no longer feasible, especially for small to medium-sized companies.

"In some cases, the required fire alarm systems with the deductibles exceed half the annual turnover of a company. But without insurance cover, there are neither loans nor investments - in the medium term, many companies are threatened with closure," says DeSH Managing Director Lars Schmidt. This development could ultimately lead to gaps in the entire value chain.

The DeSH is calling for cooperation between the industry and insurers. It also wants more flexibility and less bureaucracy from insurers. The association proposes modern, AI-based fire protection systems as a solution and is looking for new, joint ways to support the industry and its regional employers.
