Due to the increasing heterogeneity in society, the requirements of different social groups should be taken into account in the development and planning of urban neighborhoods and approaches to solutions for diverse coexistence should be found. For this reason, the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) has published the study "Social Mix and Good Neighborhoods in Newly Built Neighborhoods - Planning, Construction and Management of Inclusive Housing". This analysis is aimed at urban developers and housing construction companies as well as those responsible in the municipalities.
The study includes 16 concrete case studies provided by the urban planning and social research institute Weeber+Partner. Based on these examples, 14 housing companies from the private sector and state-owned enterprises analyze different aspects of socially mixed urban neighborhoods. The characteristics and extent of the social mix in the respective neighborhoods play an important role. The target groups and the legal building regulations in the municipalities and federal states are also analyzed. The data serve as a basis for different mixing concepts.
The social mix within a household as well as between neighboring buildings and within the neighborhood is examined. The more detailed topics deal with the structural and spatial design as well as the management of socially mixed new neighborhoods. The study also addresses the requirements for good neighborly relations and a high level of residential satisfaction. The Federal Ministry of the Interior, for Building and Home Affairs (BMI) is funding the study as a research project within the framework of the innovation program "Zukunft Bau".
