Spring is just around the corner: that's when it's time to spruce up the patio. Homeowners or tenants who have a sandstone surface on their terrace or balcony should start cleaning it as soon as possible. Because sandstone is a stable stone, but porous due to its natural structure, care should be taken when cleaning. Damaging liquids such as acidic cleaners are not recommended. High-pressure cleaners are also not suitable, as they tend to push the dirt into the stone rather than freeing it from it.
A good way to make the beautiful sandstone patio or balcony floor ready for spring is to lend a hand yourself and clean and freshen it up with little pressure. Before cleaning, the floor should be cleaned of dirt and dust with a soft broom. Special natural stone cleaners can be easily sprayed on the dirt and rinsed off with clear water after it has taken effect. It is important here that the cleaner contains no more than 2.5 percent hypochlorite. However, simple home remedies also help to clean the sandstone floor.
If stains spread on the floor, they should be immediately vacuumed up with a soft cloth. Grease stains, for example, should first be removed with kitchen paper. It is important not to rub the grease on the floor, but to dab it on. Then a mixture of lukewarm water and a mildly alkaline cleaner should be applied to the grease stains. The mixture should then be rinsed off with plenty of clean water. For dried coffee or red wine stains, an acid-free basic cleaner for floor coverings will provide relief. In any case, it is recommended to impregnate the sandstone floor in advance with a high-quality product for natural stones. This protects the floor from liquids and aggressive substances. Depending on the intensity of use, the impregnation should be repeated every two to five years.
