If owners want to renew their facade, they can also install new doors and windows in the process. Martin Brandis, energy expert at the consumer advice center, advises this. The reason for this is that heat can be lost through old windows, for example. According to the consumer advice center, the heat loss factor (UW value) for old windows is 3.0 or more and thus exceeds the legal minimum requirement of a UW value of no more than 1.30. If owners want to benefit from federal subsidies, the UW value may even be as low as 0.95, according to the consumer advice center. For front doors, the heat transfer coefficient (UD value) must not be higher than 1.30 for federal funding.
However, according to Martin Brandis, by installing new windows and doors, owners can not only save energy, but also benefit from other advantages. For example, windows can be chosen that serve to protect against sound or burglary. If possible, sun protection installed from the outside can also counteract the brightening of rooms. The consumer advice center points out that windows on the first floor should be particularly secure and have resistance classes RC2 or RC3.
